A Sky Full of Stars and the Glow of Fireflies

The Genji fireflies inhabiting Ishinoyu in Shiga Kogen are designated as a natural monument and protected due to their unique status as the highest-altitude firefly population in Japan. During their peak season from July to August, a guide will safely escort you while providing insightful explanations.

With minimal artificial light in the park, you can witness a breathtaking spectacle of fireflies glowing beneath a sky full of stars when conditions are just right.

Panoramic View of Shiga Kogen - Mt. Akaishi Fast Hike

Heading to the summit in pursuit of breathtaking views.

Embark on a round-trip trek from Onuma Pond to the summit of Mt. Akaishi, taking about two hours. With an elevation gain of approximately 400 meters to the 2,108-meter peak, the trail is adorned with seasonal alpine flora, and if you're fortunate, you may encounter wildlife such as Japanese serow. Upon reaching the summit, you'll be rewarded with the stunning panoramic view of Onuma Pond surrounded by the picturesque, autumn-tinted mountains, offering one of the finest vistas in Shiga Kogen.
